For example, this code obviously needs to be changed to 540 Again this requires general knowledge about theme editing. We’re going to change the post width to 540px.ĭon’t use the ‘replace with’ option to replace all the 500px to 540px, because it might cause errors in your code. Now, on the search bar type in 500 and look for coding that uses 500px wide for posts. ^^this will downscale any photo larger than 540px wide. Or this one depending on your theme’s html Check if you have the following code on your theme This part is very important when it comes to how single photos/gifs are viewed on your blog. However, the dimensions she uses are off by a few pixels, so I edited the dimensions so the gifs aren’t blurry on your theme. This script supports both 500px and 540px photosets on your theme. Remember to disable or uninstall any other script that rescales posts to the old dimensions. No blurry gifs or photos! All posts look nice. This script does not rescale 540px gifs/photos to 500px or upscale 500px to 540px.

To view 500px and 540px gifs on your dashboard at their original state install this script. I also stopped helping because I hardly ever received a simple thank you from anyone I helped ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I used to help any Tumblr user with any questions and theme issues regarding this tutorial but I stopped because I don’t have time anymore as I work full time. Make sure to back up your html before doing this tutorial. Only do this if you have a general idea about editing themes. This tutorial is basically a beta, and it works for some themes and not for others. I am not an expert and I only know basic html. Once people have to start hitting the zoom key to enlarge your blog because they can’t read it all your pictures are going to look fuzzy and shit anyway.I figured this trick out by just playing around with my theme. Oh how I wish we would return to those days. I remember the days when web design was all about accessibility. They usually come with tiny font sizes, and are generally pretty inaccessible. If you upload small pictures to tumblr it means you’re stuck using a narrow tumblr theme. This means you miss out on seeing a larger version of your picture or pictures, and lose so much of that gorgeous detail that you spent so long trying to capture. If you upload small pictures to tumblr, you lose out on all the benefits of being able to use the lightbox feature. PNG files are larger than JPG files, but you can upload images up to 10mb in size to tumblr, so as long as they aren’t too big you’ll be fine. You can save repeatedly in PNG format without losing image quality. File sizes will be larger, but no information will be lost. In the meantime, save your progress using PSD (Photoshop’s own proprietary format, which allows you to save layers as well), or PNG, which is a lossless format. If you want to save as jpg for the smaller file size, leave it until you have your absolute final version of the image. The more times you save the same image, the more damage is done, and you will see compression artifacts start to appear. Jpg is a lossy format, which means each time you save it compresses the image in a way that a little bit of information is lost.

Your image quality will be better.ĭo NOT repeatedly save your images as jpg. When you’re saving your pictures in Photoshop, make sure you choose Save As and NOT Save for Web. Downsampling is the holy grail of screenarchery.

When I take pictures at 4k+ resolutions it’s because when they are displayed on 1080p or 1440p screens they look a lot cleaner and less jaggy and have more pixel information to show more detail. Larger images will be downscaled and downscaling is the same as downsampling and it’s something that makes pictures look better, not worse.

If you’re uploading pictures that are smaller than tumblr’s default dashboard width they will be upscaled to fit and will look awful.

In terms of maximum height, the only rule I’ve come across is that when placing 2 or 3 pictures next to each other they should be of similar height or the taller ones will be cropped and not display properly. I only resize my pictures because I take them at huge resolutions (upwards of 4k), and I resize them down to ~1440p simply for file size and uploading bandwidth purposes (so my final pictures I upload to tumblr are around 1-7mb in size, as opposed to anywhere from 15-60+mb).
